“I drank you like the cure
when maybe
you were the poison.”

“Your body is a map
I know every inch of,
and if anyone else
were to kiss me,
all they would taste is your name.”

“I am hard to love
but know this much:
you are the only thing I like doing
more than writing poems.”

“For Nikki

I know
you and I
are not about poems or
other sentimental bullshit
but I have to tell you
even the way
you drink your coffee
knocks me the fuck out.”

“I Am Jealous of Your Tattoos
And how long

they will stay with you
after I go.”

“Morning Haiku

You've no idea
how I want to be the blood
pumping through your heart.”

“Things I Do When I Cannot Hold You

Buy all your favorite foods
so I will be ready when you come home
because once I did that and you said,
“This is how I know you love me.

“The story behind us
is until I lost you
I had no idea
what you were worth.

“He used to love me,
and now
he's just a stranger
who happens to know
all my secrets.

This is how we heal.
I will kiss you like forgiveness. You
will hold me like I'm hope. Our arms
will bandage and we will press promises
between us like flowers in a book.
I will write sonnets to the salt of sweat
on your skin. I will write novels to the scar
on your nose. I will write a dictionary
of all the words I have used trying
to describe the way it feels to have finally,
finally found you.

“Somewhere inside me
is the girl that loved you.
You did things to me
you should not have done.
Because of that I was less a girl.
Because of that I called what you did love."
